Creating, implementing, and mastering your own routine is the most critical step in achieving your personal greatness.

Every decision you make throughout the day drains energy from your body, the best way to save that mental energy is to automate as many decisions as possible through the use of habits. That precious mental energy will be incredibly useful for your deep work when you aren’t wasting it deciding what to do next.

Let’s take a dive into how I’ve helped busy professionals and entrepreneurs build a schedule that preserves their mental energy for the important work and not the daily monotony.

In the digital age, it’s more essential than ever to build a successful daily routine. A daily routine can help you prioritize your time, increase productivity, reduce stress, and achieve your goals.

Here are the steps to build a successful daily routine that works for you.

Step 1: Identify Your Priorities

The first step in building a successful daily routine is to identify your priorities. This involves taking some time to reflect on what’s most important to you. Consider your short-term and long-term goals, your personal values, and the things that bring you the most joy and fulfillment. Use this information to create a list of your top priorities.

For instance, you might schedule time for family activities, exercise, and work tasks that need to be completed each day. For the best results, I would include: exercise, reflection, and learning in your morning routine. This doesn’t need to be lengthy: a 15-minute walk, 10 minutes of writing in a gratitude journal or meditation, and 10 minutes of reading.

Start Small and Be Realistic.

When it comes to building a daily routine, it’s important to start small and be realistic. Trying to overhaul your entire schedule overnight can be overwhelming and unsustainable. Instead, start by making small changes and gradually building up to a more structured routine. Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a day and be willing to adjust your routine as needed.

Embrace Flexibility

No matter how carefully you plan your daily routine, unexpected events and interruptions are bound to happen. It’s important to be flexible and willing to adapt your routine to changes in your schedule or unexpected events. Embracing flexibility can help you stay calm and focused in the face of unexpected challenges.

Use a calendar or make a Google Sheets document to track how many days you have done your habits in a row. Build a streak you don’t want to break.

Eliminate Distractions.

Your phone is one of your largest sources of distraction. Find a way to leave it outside of your office or work area when possible and you will watch your productivity sky rocket.

I created a Google spreadsheet to give myself points for meeting goals and to measure my progress. This can act as an added layer of accountability if you make your tracking mechanism part of your routine.

Reflect on your progress. If you feel something is working well or poorly, write about it. Journal on it during your morning reflection. It is remarkable, the solutions that you can find when you reflect on both your good days and your bad days.

Celebrate Your Progress

Building a successful daily routine is a journey, not a destination. It’s important to celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small. Take time to acknowledge your successes and use any setbacks as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Step 5: Make Time for Self-Care

In addition to scheduling time for work and other activities, it’s important to make time for self-care in your daily routine. This includes things like exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones. Self-care can help you recharge and reduce stress, making you more productive and focused.

When your body, soul, and mind aren’t taken care of it is nearly impossible to persevere for extended periods. Don’t neglect your body for success. Self-care is essential because to live a fulfilling life you have to expect a lot out of your body and that means appropriately caring for it and giving it what it needs, even when that isn’t the easiest choice to make.
